James Smith Car Park
Location: Wellington, New Zealand
Project Duration: 2020 – 2022
Client Team: Prime Property Group
James Smith Carpark is a 9-storey building located at 150 Wakefield Street. It was constructed mid-1980s and the building is considered IL3 due to the ballroom on the upper levels. The building was designed as a ductile concrete shear wall structure with a precast floor system. While the main shear walls were designed relatively well the building was found to have several major deficiencies that lead to the building being assessed at <34%NBS. The building sustained significant damage during the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake and the 2013 Seddon Earthquake.
Miyamoto provided a strengthening solution to 80%NBS which addressed the deficiencies of the original design. Through collaboration with the internal Miyamoto Geotechnical team, a non-linear pushover analysis with inclusion of soil-structure-interaction was utilised to provide an efficient solution. We also provided guidance and oversight for the repairs to earthquake damage.
