Paraparaumu Memorial Hall

Location: Paraparaumu, Kapiti Coast, New Zealand
Project Duration: 2018-2021
Client: Kapiti Coast District Council

PROJECT

The Paraparaumu District Memorial Hall was built around 1955 as a War Memorial Hall. It was designed by Charles James Fearnley (1915–88), one of a small group of innovative architects who introduced and adapted European Modernism to domestic New Zealand design in the post-war period. The Hall needed extensive refurbishment to continue offering community users a safe, warm and comfortable facility.

APPROACH

Our Builiding Surveying team was engaged by the Kapiti Coast District Council (KCDC) to undertake a Condition Assessment of the Hall. In addition to assessing the condition of the building and advising on the remediation, KCDC required the building to be earthquake strengthened from 20% to 80% NBS.

SOLUTION

Our Building Surveyors worked with our Structural Engineers and an Architect to develop a plan that incorporated the remediation and earthquake strengthening to meet the Client’s requirement.
